GYB - Background
The Greenwich Youth Band was set up in 1982, in response to a need among local young musicians for an advanced band, outside the school environment. Under its director, Chris Lloyd who took over in 1984, the band grew steadily in size and in standard of playing, until 1990, when it was divided, now there is also the Greenwich Concert Band for adult musicians.

Since then, the band has expanded again, and their standard of playing is now unsurpassed locally. They play a wide range of music, from classical to jazz, from marches to pop, and they are in constant demand for concerts and fetes in the area, and have helped raise thousands of pounds for charity.
The Band members are mostly from local schools, and are normally within the 11 - 18 year age group. They have a very good rapport with each other, which makes a good working atmosphere in rehearsals and concerts. As well as their success locally, they have played in Canterbury Cathedral, Southwark Cathedral, at Westminster Abbey, Eltham Palace, The Albert Hall, The Royal Festival Hall and the Barbican.
The band has a successful history of European tours, and the foreign concert tour has now become an annual event. Band members love these tours and the concert audiences are very enthusiastic and appreciative. Previous destinations have included Barcelona, Lake Garda, Tuscany, Salzburg, Valkenburg, Paris and Prague.
